This is a warning out to all businesses to be extra cautious of a new scam that we came across today. A customer of ours, that will remain nameless, is currently in the middle of dealing with this and it is hideous.
It starts out with a classic scam carried out by the Traveller community; an offer to perform services (knife/drill sharpening, rubbish clearance, maintenance) that ultimately ends in an over-inflated bill. This approach gets tried on in homes across the country, however they appear to have ramped it up a level and are targeting businesses now. If the offer to provide services is accepted, a bill is then sent running into the thousands and then what happens if payment is not forthcoming is the surprising bit. At this one company we work with, the MD’s phone number was acquired and then targeted with a phone-dialling attack – ie dialled continuously so that no inbound calls could be made. This was then followed up with threatening visits (informing that caravans would be parked on the premises if the bill wasn’t settled) during which the entire company phone list was procured and every mobile number and direct dial in the business subject to the same attack and no inbound calls can be made into the business.
The phone companies are largely powerless to prevent it and the police are unable to act because no apparent crime has been committed. We find this frightening because it seems that everyone is getting in on the tech-crime act now.
